Borough unveil plans for artificial pitch surface

By Connor Steel

GOSPORT BOROUGH FC have officially unveiled a proposal to have a new 3-G artificial pitch installed within the AEI Stadium; which will see this surface transformed from grass to enhance the playing conditions and securing a state of sustainability for training / competitive fixtures as part of a commitment to create an “all-year round” community facility.

A planning application was recently submitted to the council by the club chairman Iain McInnes and it is hoped that all approved work is completed before the new 2025-26 campaign begins in early August. This includes a full removal of the existing grass and the laying of Tiger Turf Elite which is an artificial surface certified to FIFA Quality Pro standards.

No other changes are proposed to the layout and structures of the AEI Stadium in order to carry out the work which is reported to cost £500000 if approved. A grant was awarded to this club by Gosport Borough Council early this year as part of the Town Hall’s Budget plans to spend up to £1 million to create brand new community sports / leisure facilities.

This application follows discussions at the club regarding ‘self-sustainability’ and removing the risks of weather related match postponements, which have plagued local football teams and causes lost match revenues. If approved Gosport would follow the lead of their Southern League rivals Sholing FC, who have already started works for an artificial pitch.

There is concerns that the artificial surface could lead to a “greater risk” of serious injuries for players particularly ankle sprains and non-contact knee injuries. Other supporters have stated that this move could further limit the sentiment for traditional grass football whilst some feel the funds could be shared with other clubs in the area such as Fleetlands FC.

Readers can formally send their opinions before June 11 on the link, which was first created on May 14. All documents are available to read online and council planners have put July 11 as the ‘target date’ for this final decision to be made.
