Bygone Years: Wartime women in Gosport

WORLD WAR TWO provided a crucial opportunity for all women as they were requested to support the huge war effort in a range of different roles; including housewives, factory workers, farm hands and mothers whilst male personnel fought on the front line. A total of eight million females were employed in Britain at the climax across multiple sectors; many of these roles continuing even after the guns fell silent in late summer of 1945.

In this weekly edition of Bygone Years, our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been looking through his huge collections of history local imagery to showcase our female wartime efforts from 1939 to 1945. The six images show scenes from Women’s Royal Navy Service (WRNS) and Women’s Volunteer Service (WVS) in Gosport, alongside vital support they offered at local and international level (credit to original photographers).
