Dramatic drop in number of local Covid-19 cases

THE number of people infected by Covid-19 has shown a dramatic drop drop across the region, falling by half in both Gosport and Fareham.

According to the Local News page on the BBC’s website, the infection rate in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight is comfortably below the national average.

An encouraging trend is revealed by the number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 people in the seven days up to and including last Thursday, January 13, compared with the week before, shown in brackets.

A breakdown of the figures by local authority area is:

  • Southampton – 896 (down from 1,390)
  • Portsmouth – 923 (down from 1,552)
  • Rushmoor – 1,189 (down from 1,761)
  • Gosport – 850 (down from 1,528)
  • Havant – 773 (down from 1,445)
  • Winchester – 784 (down from 1,276)
  • Fareham – 783 (down from 1,511)
  • New Forest – 728 (down from 1,189)
  • Basingstoke and Deane – 970 (down from 1,519)
  • East Hampshire – 824 (down from 1,246)
  • Eastleigh – 797 (down from 1,538)
  • Test Valley – 953 (down from 1,436)
  • Hart – 748 (down from 1,403)
  • Isle of Wight – 628 (down from 881)

For comparison, the average for England is 1,027 (down from 1,807).

The latest figures were updated on Monday, January 17, and come from the government’s coronavirus dashboard.
