Fellowship steps towards memorial fundraising target

By Jilly Salvat

THE GOSPORT D-DAY FELLOWSHIP have expressed their pride as they successfully reached 70% of the funds required to complete its Memorial project at Stokes Bay to honour the legacy of those who served as part of Operation Overlord; which marked its eightieth anniversary earlier this year and remains a key moment in history.

The project was first launched in February and followed a thirteen year campaign to install a permanent memorial to reflect the events of June 6, 1944; whilst also being a focus point for local celebrations such as Remembrance Sunday. Project organisers stated that they would need a total of £30,000 to make this a reality and asked the local community for support.

In their recent update to mark Armistice Day (November 11) the group announced that they have reached the seventy percent milestone this month, a figure that is approximately £21,000. This has been achieved by superb support from the local community, veterans, local councils and generous donors alongside many events; which include D-Day talks, 80/80 initiative and fundraising stall on the High Street

The project lead said: “Reaching 70% of our fundraising goal since February is a monumental achievement and we couldn’t have done it without the incredible generosity of our supporters. This project is not just about remembering the past but ensuring that the legacy of D-Day continues to inspire and educate people for years to come.”

“The Fellowship extends its heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to the memorial project, including local businesses, individuals, and organisations. Your support has made all the difference in bringing this project closer to completion. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to finishing this important memorial. Together, we can ensure that the sacrifices made by the D-Day veterans are never forgotten.”

Despite hitting seventy percent of their target, the Fellowship continues to seek donations to close the final gap and ensure the project is completed within this D-Day 80th Anniversary Year. Readers can learn more about the project via the Gosport D-Day Fellowship Facebook page.
