Hendon clash postponed for Borough

GOSPORT BOROUGH’S scheduled away trip to Hendon on Tuesday night has been postponed due to an outbreak of Covid-19 cases within the home side; the Southern League approving the cancellation on Monday afternoon following talks with both sides throughout the day.

Hendon apologised for inconvenience to all supporters and staff as Gosport prepared to make a 200 mile trip to North London to play this league encounter, which was originally scheduled in November but regional cup competitions signalled a clash and tomorrow’s date arranged.

It appears that Hendon have seen several players test positive for Covid-19 over the last few days as their clash versus Swindon Supermarine on Saturday was cancelled, whilst this upcoming weekend’s game remains shrouded in doubt depending on player’s health and safety.

But Shaun Gale won’t be too disappointed about this postponement after a hectic schedule recently that has seen them play over three successive midweeks and eleven alone since the start of August, a figure that includes both knockout cup ties and Southern League games.

This hectic fixture schedule has occurred amidst a backdrop of illness, injuries and suspensions in the Borough squad behind the scenes; alongside players such as midfielder Theo Widdrington returning to parent clubs and replacements still gelling into the play-off hopefuls’ team.

Naturally this has come at a cost in recent form at Privett Park as they lost to Swindon Supermarine and Taunton Town in late November alongside a struggling draw with Kings Langley, although they are now unbeaten across three league games barring their cup exit to Totton last Wednesday.

Fifth-placed Gosport will now hope that this free week will help players recover and rest up before two big games over Christmas; furthermore looking to return to winning ways after their late draw versus Dorchester at home two days ago conceding in the 88th minute of the game.

They will be travelling to Dorset on Saturday afternoon to play league strugglers Wimborne Town before hosting Hartley Wintney over Bank Holiday Monday (December 27) at Privett Park; looking for some points on the board as Shaun Gale looks to push away the chasing pack.

A new date will be organised for the game between Hendon and Gosport at Silver Jubilee Park, with the reverse fixture due to be played at Privett Park on March 5. It is however likely the game will be played in midweek although there is no confirmation by league or club officials.
