How to make a béchamel sauce

ONE of the basic recipe that any cook or chef gets taught is how to make a béchamel sauce. This is sauce that can be easily be made for a lot of comfort food recipes such as lasagnes and pasta bakes and the base for several other sauces such as:
- Cheddar Cheese Sauce
- Mustard Sauce
- Cheesy Sauce
- Nantua Sauce
- Soubise Sauce
- Mornay Sauce
- Cream Sauce
- Parsley Sauce
Béchamel sauce recipe
prep time: 5 mins
cook time: 10 mins
60g butter
60g plain flour
600ml milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Bay leaf (optional)
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over a medium low heat.
- Stir in the flour to make your roux so it looks like a paste.
- Gently warm your milk in a secondary saucepan.
- Add a ladle of milk at a time and stir it in the roux
- Until you have a thick creamy sauce that coats the back of your spoon.
- Remove from the heat and add salt and pepper to taste.
