How to make a béchamel sauce

ONE of the basic recipe that any cook or chef gets taught is how to make a béchamel sauce. This is sauce that can be easily be made for a lot of comfort food recipes such as lasagnes and pasta bakes and the base for several other sauces such as:

  1. Cheddar Cheese Sauce
  2. Mustard Sauce
  3. Cheesy Sauce
  4. Nantua Sauce
  5. Soubise Sauce
  6. Mornay Sauce
  7. Cream Sauce
  8. Parsley Sauce

Béchamel sauce recipe

prep time: 5 mins

cook time: 10 mins

60g butter

60g plain flour

600ml milk

Salt and pepper to taste

Bay leaf (optional)

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over a medium low heat.
  2. Stir in the flour to make your roux so it looks like a paste.
  3.  Gently warm your milk in a secondary saucepan.
  4. Add a ladle of milk at a time and stir it in the roux
  5. Until you have a thick creamy sauce that coats the back of your spoon.
  6. Remove from the heat and add salt and pepper to taste.
