Police arrest man after shopping centre theft

POLICE HAVE arrested a man in Fareham Shopping Centre this afternoon (Friday, July 30) following a theft of a purse from an elderly woman.

The incident was investigated following numerous reports from members of the public at the scene.

The victim was said to be shopping in a town centre charity shop at about 12.30pm when a man took a purse from her trolley, with the elderly women – alerted by fellow shoppers nearby – confirming that her property was missing.

According to Hampshire Constabulary, the victim went after the suspect and caught up with him in West Street, opposite The Lord Arthur Lee Pub.

From there , a small altercation took place when members of the public demanded the suspect return the stolen items to his victim.

After the confrontation ended,  the suspect made off again and was shortly detained by more members of the public near Fareham Bus Station. The man was arrested as police officers arrived at the scene and taken into custody, where he currently remains.

Now police are appealing for witnesses and hope to speak to anyone who was in the shop at the time and saw the incident, alongside anyone who was involved in the altercation opposite The Lord Arthur Lee.
