Don’t be caught napping by becoming a victim of online ‘Sextortion’ blackmail
POLICE have issued a warning about soaring ‘Sextortion’ statistics – an internet crime during which people are lured into performing sexual acts in front of a webcam.
Victims don’t realise that criminals record their actions and then use the video footage in an attempt to blackmail the victim.
Offenders often threaten to upload a video to the internet or send it to a victim’s family and friends if the criminal doesn’t get money.
The National Crime Agency understands the seriousness of the threat from online blackmailers and is working with Hampshire Constabulary and other agencies to give clear and effective advice.
Hampshire Constabulary aims to:
- protect existing victims;
- prevent more residents from becoming vulnerable to the manipulative and devastating effects of sextortion;
- help victims report to the police more easily.
The video below highlights how sextortion can happen.
