Thousands enjoy Halloween themed fireworks event

By Connor Steel

LOCAL RESIDENTS joined together to sample the annual “Bonfire Night & Fireworks Spectacular” held at HMS Sultan last Thursday evening (October 31); with thousands of people reported to have attended this popular and ever growing event which celebrated its ‘2024 edition’ by offering everybody the chance to mark Halloween throughout this occasion.

This night started at 5:30pm with crowds enjoying the huge variety of funfair rides including the ghost train and dodgem bumper cars; whilst the food area was lively throughout the evening selling a variety of hot and cold snacks. There was also a chance to purchase glow sticks and small strobe lights that add ed with the ‘colourful feel’ under the faded skies.

A single firework was released at 7:30pm before the bonfire was lit to loud cheers fifteen minutes later; its bright orange flames illumining the skies and surrounding area. These proceedings were marshalled expertly by the popular Greatest Hits Radio Presenter Mark Collins; who gave multiple countdowns before the fireworks finale started at exactly 8:30pm.

Halloween was the key theme of this display as crowds danced and sang to music such as Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, which proved a backtrack to a series of rockets, bangs, crackles and catherine wheels above. Videos and photos were further taken by the majority in attendance; many further dressing in themed clothing and traditional trick or trick outfits.

Loud applause greeted the end of a spectacular display after approximately twenty-minutes; which was further enjoyed by hundreds of spectators who watched from just outside the gates. This included family members from all generations and some dogs were also present; thus helping to create another successful evening of fine entertainment for Gosport.

One reader reflected on the spectacle as they told the Globe: “Similarly to last year, the fireworks were brilliant to watch and gave us something to look ahead for the Half Term holiday. We came with our extended family members and made many amazing memories again. It has been a long few weeks for us; therefore it was good to see laughter and smiles.”

This occasion helped to raise valuable funding towards the “HMS Sultan Service Charity”, which supports the wellbeing of those working / training within the training base and their families. Credit must further be given to the establishment’s staff / volunteers who ensured ‘public safety’ throughout the entire event; which passed smoothly without any incidents.
