Boroughs announce Remembrance Sunday services
LOCAL RESIDENTS have been invited to attend Remembrance Sunday services that will be held in Gosport and Fareham during the morning of November 8, which will give communities the opportunity to honour those personnel who died in the two World Wars and later conflicts.
Organisers have released information about the services including timings and locations; the majority of which remain unchanged from recent years. They are completely free to attend and everybody is welcomed to pay their respects together with other towns / cities across the UK.
In Gosport the service will be held from the War Memorial Hospital on Bury Road, which will start with an armed guard from HMS Sultan being formed on the road opposite. Joining them will be representatives from the Royal British Legion, veterans’ groups, Scouts, Guides, Sea Cadets, Air Cadets, and other local organisations.
As outlined by Gosport Borough Council the parade will step off at 10.30am and the ceremony will begin from 10:55am with the Mayor’s Chaplain, Rev Paul Chamberlain, conducting the proceedings. Music will be provided by Gosport Solent Brass and a bugler from Gosport Solent Brass will sound Last Post and Reveille.
The Mayor, Cllr Kirsten Bradley, will lay a wreath on behalf of the borough. She will be joined by the King’s representative from the Lord-Lieutenant’s office, Admiral Sir Philip Jones GCB DL. Wreaths from civic, service and association representatives will then be laid. On conclusion of the service a march past will take place in front of the Gosport War Memorial Hospital, where the salute will be taken by the Mayor and Admiral Jones.
Proceedings in Fareham will begin at 9:45am with a ‘Forever Remembered’ ceremony at the War Memorial (Holy Trinity Church), where names of those who have died as a serving member in a British Armed Forces conflict from Fareham area will be read out.
The Parade will step off from the Duke of Connaught’s Own Club in Western Road at 10.40am. From there it is set to march up Kings Road onto West Street under the direction of the Parade Marshall of HMS Collingwood; arriving at the War Memorial where the two minutes’ silence will be observed from 11.00am. This will be followed by the Ceremony of Laying Wreaths and a special service at Holy Trinity Church.
The Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Mrs Tina Ellis, said: “Remembrance Day is a deeply meaningful occasion for myself, my family and the whole Fareham community. In Hampshire, Fareham has the second highest number of veterans living in the Borough, second only to Gosport, as well as many serving personnel. The ‘Forever Remembered’ ceremony and Parade offer poignant reminders of those brave servicemen and women who have lost their lives in the defence of our freedom. I encourage residents to join us in paying tribute to the fallen as well as those still serving.”
Fareham Borough Council have stated that the Remembrance Day Parade and Service has again been arranged in conjunction with the Royal British Legion and HMS Collingwood. It has also been confirmed that the Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood will be attending the parade with HMS Collingwood’s Volunteer Band and Platoons.
