Collingwood enjoy festive carol service at care home
By Maddie Purdy
STAFF based at HMS Collingwood continued their longstanding affiliation with a local care home as they attended a heart-warming carol service for Christmas, which was attended by residents, family members and sailors earlier this week.
Deputy Manager of Tudor Lodge, Melissa Mabbett, said how great it was that the Navy attended. She said that “it helps residents, formerly in the services, to unlock memories when they see the sailors in uniform, and it reignites the connection.” She further added that it is particularly beneficial for those with dementia.
For example, eighty-four year old David Murray is a former Royal Navy Captain and has served at HMS Collingwood during his career. His granddaughter, Lorna Robb, explained that regardless of his dementia, David seems to light up when the sailors visit. This is because the Navy has played a huge role in their family and it’s clear these visits remind him of this.
Not only this, but the care home’s oldest resident, Eva, recently turned 103 years old and she enjoyed the event; as well as the positive engagement from the sailors. The fantastic event was led by former PTI David Pepper, who also brought along some of his Veteran friends. Together, with members of Victory Squadron, they all entertained the residents. Not only this, families and friends of the residents also joined in, making this a truly inclusive and memorable occasion for all.
Beyond the singing sailors spent time chatting with residents and their loved ones about their stories; the sounds of laughter and conversation being heard across the venue. Sailors were also happy to lend a helping hand to the staff wherever needed, demonstrating the Royal Navy’s key values and further continues a bond that has lasted for many years.
