Collingwood hosts poignant Armistice Day ceremony

By Marie Arnott

PERSONNEL from HMS Collingwood gathered together on Tuesday morning (November 11) to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country; the Fareham-based training establishment holding a solemn memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony to mark Armistice Day that was attended by hundreds of people on-site.

The poignant occasion commemorates the 107th anniversary since the end of the First World War back in 1918 and remembers those who died across both World Wars, as well as the fallen personnel from the subsequent armed conflicts. During the service Base Warrant Officer, Warrant Officer Chris Lindop, read aloud the names of Naval personnel who have sadly lost their lives in the past year.

A two minutes silence was held to pause and reflect from 11am to join the rest of the UK; whilst Captain Tim Davey, Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood, led the tributes by laying a wreath on behalf of the establishment. Additional wreaths were laid by the HMS Collingwood Officers’ Association, and children from the Woodentots Nursery placed their own in a touching gesture of remembrance.

Speaking at the service, Captain Davey said to the audience: “It is important that we take time to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. As we come together today, we take the time to pause and reflect, and also to remember all of those in the Naval Service and across Defence who have sadly lost their lives more recently.”
