Council announces fountain improvement works

By Council Communications

GOSPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL have announced that they will begin restoration works to the Falklands Gardens fountain from October 26 (Monday), which is set to deliver a long awaited upgrade to one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.

The project is expected to take around six weeks depending on the weather conditions and all improvements were approved by councillors back in March this year. Councillors have since stated that the woks will represent a significant investment in the gardens and will provide long term benefits for residents, visitors, and the memorial itself.

These works will see the introduction of a modern and more efficient recirculating water system, as well as the replacement of replace ageing mechanical and filtration equipment. Improvements to water quality will also be made and works are set to reduce maintenance requirements for the future.

Furthermore these improvements will ensure the fountain meets current health and safety standards, including enhanced bacterial management through chlorinated water. And finally, these works will have the benefit of refreshing the overall appearance and reliability of the feature, which is a landmark that stands proud near the waterfront and is seen by thousands of people every day.

Councillor Stevyn Ricketts, Chair of the Community & Environment Board, said: “This investment will give the fountain at the heart of Falklands Gardens a new lease of life. By fully replacing its operational equipment and bringing it up to modern standards, we are safeguarding this important memorial so it can continue to honour those lost for generations to come.”

To allow the installation of new equipment and pipework, parts of the gardens and nearby walkways will be temporarily closed. Clear signage and accessible alternative routes will be provided to ensure residents and visitors can continue to enjoy the gardens throughout the works. This restoration marks a key step in preserving one of Gosport’s most cherished public spaces, ensuring it remains a welcoming and respectful place for reflection for many years ahead.
