Council announces improvements to skateparks

GOSPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL have announced that work is underway to improve the facilities at two popular skateparks in the borough; which is part of a programme to make these areas safe and useable for local areas.

Both Bridgemary and Leesland skateparks are currently undergoing surface repair works, as part of Gosport Borough Council’s ongoing investment in play and recreation facilities. The programme of works will ensure both facilities continue to meet health and safety standards, while also enhancing the riding experience for users.

A leading skatepark construction firm has begun the work, which includes repairs to damaged concrete, filling holes and cracks, smoothing joints, repairing drainage covers, removing rust and carrying out maintenance across almost every piece of equipment.

The skatepark works form part of Gosport Borough Council’s £236,000 Playground Safety Programme, which is delivering improvements across the borough’s playgrounds and recreational spaces. Projects have been prioritised following inspections and assessments.

Council Leader, Cllr Zoe Huggins, said: “Our skateparks are really popular and provide opportunities for people of all ages to be active, develop their skills and enjoy spending time outdoors. These improvements will not only ensure the skateparks remain safe, but will also provide a better riding experience for skateboarders, scooter riders and BMX users.

She continued to say: “This work is part of our wider investment in playgrounds and recreational facilities across the borough, helping to ensure residents have access to high-quality places to play, exercise and socialise.”

The work is expected to take around a week to complete subject to weather conditions and both sites are closed whilst it is being undertaken. Signage is also on site to make users aware and more updates will be available in due course.
