Guests enjoy silent movie event at Thorngate

By Richard Bunce

OVER one hundred people came together at Thorngate Halls to attend the venue’s Buster Keaton event last Thursday evening (March 12th); which was an occasion that was brilliantly organised by Gosport Organ Club and the Ritz Cinema.

The event featured a special showing of Buster Keaton’s silent classic of Sherlock Junior, which was first shown in 1924 and was introduced by Rob Hind. One of Keaton’s amazing stunts left him with a broken neck and this could explain why this film is slightly shorter than his others, but it didn’t stop him from filming at all. And With so many great gags packed into 47 minutes, it has become one of the silent cinema’s best loved classics.

Michael Wooldridge was also in attendance as he demonstrated some of the features and special effects of the theatre organ, before explaining his approach to accompanying movies. Guests were then able to settle down and experience the film just as it was intended; the live accompaniment being absolutely superb and manipulating the emotions without taking any attention away from the screen.

Organisers would like to pay their thanks to Michael for giving guests such a splendid feel-good evening. Thorngate Halls are set to have another movie showing in the autumn with Andy Quin at the console and readers are asked to keep November 12 free in their diaries, whilst they can get more details from Gosportorgan@gmail.com.
