Local group celebrate thirty years with picnic event
MEMBERS from u3a Gosport took advantage of hot weather as they came together last Thursday (August 14) for a joyous thirtieth anniversary picnic event; which was held to mark three successful decades of lifelong learning, friendship and community engagement in the local area.
The occasion was held under warm summer temperatures and blue skies at Nicholson Gardens as it drew participants from across the borough; thus reaffirming the u3a’s enduring spirit and the warmth that has defined it since its founding back in 1995 in many towns / cities of the UK.
It was established to allow those people not in full time work to continue learning, socialising and sharing their skills beyond retirement. Gosport’s branch has grown from a modest group of enthusiastic locals into a thriving organisation with nearly three hundred members & over forty interest Groups.
These include exploring art, walking groups, history, fine dining, music, pickleball, criminology, forensics, knitting, crafts, board games, sea dipping and more; which run alongside regular monthly meetings and a busy calendar of outings and events. u3a Gosport prides itself on running something for everyone through a wealth of opportunities to remain mentally, physically and socially active.
Their milestone event was a testament to the vision of original founders Pat Wharton & Mary Patchett; bringing together long-standing members who have witnessed the group’s evolution over the years, as well as newer faces eager to become part of the u3a Gosport story. Nicholson Gardens were adorned with blue and yellow bunting and balloons, which helped to echo the u3a’s signature colours.
There was a quiz and craft items were available to purchase before members raised a toast with a glass of Buck Fizz; celebrating the past, present, and future of u3a Gosport. They further enjoyed birthday cake, laughter and exchanged stories with other guests; including Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Kirsten Bradley, who was in attendance alongside Town Hall colleague, Cllr Lesley Meenaghan.
Both were welcoming and found time to speak to everybody who attended the picnic, whilst the Mayor took the opportunity to highlight the vital role that u3a Gosport plays in fostering connection and wellbeing among older adults. The Chair closed the afternoon with heartfelt thanks to all those who had contributed to the day’s success.
An invitation remains open to anybody who is no longer in full time work and wishing to join a welcoming community where knowledge is shared and friendships blossom. Membership is less than 60p a week and is paid annually with readers urged to visit https://gosport.u3asite.uk/ or search online for u3a Gosport for more information.
