Picture Special: Demolishing Gosport Bus Station

By Connor Steel

FOLLOWING MONTHS of unforeseen delays the full demolition of ‘Gosport Bus Station’ finally started two weeks ago as part of a project to transform the borough’s popular waterfront spaces; thus marking the end of an era for the old L-shaped complex building that was first built in 1972, and was a successful commuter transport facility for five decades.

It signals a step forward for this regeneration scheme that was first discussed over five years ago and come nearly 12 months after the station was shut down to the public. A smaller circular interchange opened back in October 2024 and developers have also moved the taxi rank to a nearby space, whilst the car park has been moved to this opposite side.

Concrete and brick will next be incorporated into a new development called the People’s Park; which proposes a fresh bandstand area, office space and waterfront food / drink facilities according to this approved planning application. This will give visitors great views of the harbour area and the marina, whilst also creating jobs and helping local businesses.
