Submariners resurface for annual Christmas social

By Nigel Denham

GOSPORT SUBMARINERS ASSOCIATION were left celebrating after over seventy members and guests came together last Wednesday evening (December 3) for the group’s annual Christmas social; which was held at the local Royal Naval Association (RNA) and was an occasion that left the bar in critical condition.

The event drew serving and veterans from multiple generations of the Submarine Service with many of whom had served on some of the Royal Navy’s most iconic boats over the years. Delicious food was provided on an evening that also blended tradition, camaraderie, and classic naval humour; which was welcomed by everybody in attendance.

An auction and raffle were held with many submariners paying suspiciously high prices for items they absolutely did not need, could not carry home, and may not even remember bidding on. One guest was seen proudly leaving with a framed picture of a ship he never served on. Another won a crest and promptly offered it as a “trade good” at the bar.

Entertainment was provided by none other than Shep Woolley, who once again demonstrated his remarkable ability to get a room full of ex-submariners laughing, singing, and nearly spilling their drinks – a serious offence in any naval establishment.

RNA Gosport Chairman, Steve Thorpe, reflected: “Shep brings something a unique form of entertainment—keeping everyone amused and entertained with humour and songs. It’s more than entertainment; it’s a connection to the Royal Navy.”

Throughout the night, submariners swapped stories, reunited with old shipmates, and welcomed partners and family members into the fold. It appeared to be a fantastic occasion that saw guests enjoy the company of others and relaxed in a lovely venue.

Organisers warn that next year’s event may require reinforcement of the bar area, additional raffle prizes, and possibly a noise abatement plan – though Gosport residents have reportedly agreed to “just put up with it.”
