Sultan instructor raises money for well-loved hospice

By Matthew Hibberd

HMS SULTAN have congratulated a Royal Navy Engineering Instructor as he exceeded his fundraising expectations through a charity golf tournament day held earlier this year; which was attended by guests including fellow colleagues from the Gosport-based training establishment in support of a local and well-loved hospice.

The tournament was organised by Leading Air Engineering Technician Oliver Drain from the Royal Naval Air Engineering & Survival Equipment School (RNAESS) and was held during his summer leave, where he sought to raise funds for The Rowan Hospice in Waterlooville. And it proved to be a successful use of spare time as he raised an impressive total of £2,086.65.

The charity golf day significantly exceeded Oliver’s initial expectations and demonstrates the generosity of participants who supported this worthy cause. And he recently made the visit to The Rowans Living Well Centre in Waterlooville to personally hand over the donation; marking the successful conclusion of his fundraising efforts.

The funds raised will directly support The Rowans Hospice’s vital work in providing specialist palliative care to patients and families across the region; including Portsmouth, south-east Hampshire and West Sussex. This well-known charity relies heavily on community fundraising to continue its essential services; so was very welcome for the huge donation.

As part of RNAESS, Oliver plays a crucial role in training the next generation of Royal Navy engineers who maintain the sophisticated aircraft systems and survival equipment that keep naval aviation operational around the globe. He was clearly thankful for the donations as he reflected on the fundraising success, saying:

“The Rowans Hospice holds a deeply personal significance for me, having supported my father through his life-limiting illness and in his final moments. Choosing them as the beneficiary was my way of giving back to an organisation that gave us so much.”
