Sultan personnel enjoy tasty treats in NCI cake sale

By Matthew Hibberd

PERSONNEL from across HMS Sultan were able to enjoy a tasty winter treat as the Gosport-based training base recently held a fantastic charity cake safe; which was supporting the local National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) and raised an impressive total of £557.09 for a vital organisation that helps keep coastal communities safe in the borough.

NCI’s dedicated volunteer watchkeepers provide both essential eyes and ears along the coastlines of England and Wales; where they monitor radio channels and maintain watch in poor visibility conditions such as weather. Operating from sixty stations, they’re often the first to spot people in danger and alert HM Coastguard to direct rescue services.

NCI volunteers respond to an average of two major incidents every day, assisting with everything from swimmers in difficulty to missing person searches, and helping to protect walkers, climbers, kayakers, and marine life along our shores. NCI relies entirely on voluntary contributions to continue their life-saving work, collaborating with the RNLI, HM Coastguard and other agencies to keep Britain’s coastline safe.

This generous contribution from HMS Sultan will support NCI’s vital work in water safety, search and rescue operations, and protecting those who use our coastal waters.  Organisers have also thanked everybody who baked and brought cakes for this wonderful cause; including donuts, chocolate brownies and flapjack squares.
