Thousands enjoy Sultan event despite late change
By Connor Steel
THOUSANDS OF local residents all came together on Thursday evening (October 30) to enjoy the annual Bonfire and Fireworks Night at HMS Sultan despite an unfortunate late ‘programme change’; which saw the fireworks display sadly cancelled due to Met Office forecasts of strong wind gusts that increased to 40 miles per hour during the fun spectacle.
It was decided at approximately 11am that these forecasts were unsafe for the pyrotechnic display and the public were made aware shortly afterwards; causing large disappointment to a number of residents and families. HMS Sultan have promised that a fifty percent refund will be sent to everyone whom has brought tickets within seven to 10 working days.
Despite disappointment it was announced that the bonfire and a fun fair would still be operating including multiple rides and activities that were ‘assessible’ for a small cost. The ghost train and bumper cars were particularly popular as were the hook-a-duck and the dart-throwing fun which were met with a mix of laughter, frustration and screaming throughout.
There was further entertainment from Nation Radios Mark Collins as he offered a number of popular songs that helped to reflect the event’s theme; which marked an eightieth anniversary of Victory of Europe (VE) and Victory in Japan (VJ) Day. Lights from the rides and activities helped to create a colourful backdrop, which glistened against the darker skies.
Organisers have apologised for the late fireworks cancellation but have reiterated it was a ‘difficult decision’ and safety will always be their ‘absolute priority’ although they have thanked those who came to support as well as the volunteers involved. More updates will be available about their event in 2026 and tickets when these are all available to purchase.
