Fantastic views but what about the Falkland Gardens’ loos

By Chief Correspondent Rob Thomas

In a recent public consultation reported in The Gosport & Fareham Globe respondents said they were unhappy with the toilets at Falkland Gardens but the local authorities say it is not an issue.

An appendix to the Hampshire County Council officer’s report on the proposed Gosport Interchange Improvements contained the ‘Key Findings’ of the public feedback and these included: 77 per cent of respondents were dissatisfied with the toilets at the bus station.

Asked by The Globe for more details about this feedback, a county council spokesperson said: “Currently there are no plans to upgrade the toilets adjacent to Gosport Bus Interchange as part of our improvement proposals.

“As outlined within Gosport Borough Council’s wider regeneration proposals for the Waterfront within Gosport Waterfront and Town Centre SPD – March 2018, the toilets would be re-provisioned.

“In terms of additional information … There is no further additional feedback specific to the toilets at Falklands Gardens.”

The loos are the responsibility of Gosport Borough Council and are the only public conveniences at the eastern end of Gosport High Street.

The borough council’s Waterfront and Town Centre SPD states: “The site should include public conveniences which meet the Changing Places Standard”, though no timescale is provided.

‘replaced by a better quality facility as part of the Bus Station development’

However, in Section 12 of the Summary and Analysis of Consultation Responses to the SPD, a Gosport Borough Council officer commented that the toilets at Gosport bus station, “will be replaced by a better quality facility as part of the Bus Station development”.

Approached by The Globe about the dissatisfaction with the toilets expressed by respondents to the county council’s Gosport Interchange Improvements consultation, a borough council spokesperson said: “No specific issues were raised with Gosport Borough Council as part of the consultation.

“The Council is committed to making the borough accessible to everyone, and any dissatisfaction with the facilities should be reported directly to Streetscene by contacting them on the Freephone number 08000 198598 or by emailing streetscene@gosport.gov.uk and we will investigate any issues or concerns raised.”
