Wort sweeps Portchester season awards

By Connor Steel

FRESH from terrorising Wessex League defences in a long 2021-22 season, Portchester striker Lee Wort has sealed a fantastic year by winning four out of six available season awards following votes held last weekend before their game against Portland United on Easter Saturday.

The hotshot finisher scored a total of forty goals from 47 appearances alongside many assists as the Royals finished seventh in the Wessex League and reached two cup semi-finals in a fine run of form, ensuring his place in the top five list for goals scored in Portchester club history.

Particular highlights include a brace that dumped Fareham out of the Hampshire Senior Cup in early December, four goals against Amesbury and a fine hat-trick in a nine-nil victory over Christchurch; alongside double versus Cowes Sports and Alton Town respectively at the On-Site Group Stadium.

And the finisher has been rewarded for brilliant performances with individual accolades as he won the top scorer award alongside the Club’s Player of the Season, the Players’ Player of the Season and the Supporters’ Player of the Season following votes from supporters / teammates.

However, two other players were selected for some of the awards up for grabs. Midfielder Jake Raine won the Manager’s Player of the Season prize and Harvey Aston was chosen as the Young Player of the Season.

In other news Portchester are celebrating a new club record as they scored ninety-nine league goals in 2021-22, beating the previous highest of 91 back in 2014-15. Dave Carter’s side further recorded the club’s third best points total at Premier Division level, getting 72 points from 40 games compared to eighty-two in the 2014-15 season when they finished third behind Petersfield Town and Winchester City.
