Author prepares for publication of Gosport book
By Philip Dean
AN AUTHOR from Gosport is preparing to publish a new book later this month revealing the rick history within the borough including its streets, buildings and people; thus joining a number of UK cities and towns to be showcased in this way.
The book is entitled A-Z of Gosport and has been produced by Richard M Jones; who is a historian specialising in the local history of places in Yorkshire. These centre particularly on the coast, maritime and military topics including shipwrecks and other disasters, the First and Second World Wars, and railways. He has published numerous books on these subjects and appeared on numerous radio and tv programmes as well as podcasts and blog
His latest book will look at Gosport and its association with the military for much of its history. Although this presence has been heavily reduced today, a few Royal Navy establishments remain and the town has many reminders of its history as a major naval base on Portsmouth Harbour.
The first fortifications were built during the reign of King Charles II and further garrisons, training establishments, hospitals, barracks and other buildings were added in subsequent centuries. Many of the buildings have been converted to other uses and the harbour is now a marina.
Alongside the famous historical connections the publication will encounter unusual characters, tucked-away places and unique events that are less well known. Readers will discover tales about the Explosion! Museum, the ‘Gosport Nancy’ folk song, an enclosed Victorian garden and the scientist who identified a rare genetic disorder, among many other fascinating facts in this A–Z tour of Gosport’s history.
This fully illustrated book is being published by Amberley Publishing and is set for a release on May 15 (Friday) through many formats; covering the worlds of paperback, Kindle, Kobo and iBook. It is priced as costing £15.99 through Amazon and readers can pre-order the ninety-six page book for delivery on or after its release day next week. Alternatively it can be purchased directly from Amberley Publishing by visiting https://www.amberley-books.com/az-of-gosport.html.
