Bygone Years: Gosport High Street

GOSPORT HIGH STREET dates back to the eighteenth century and was once known as Middle Street; making up the three “main roads” in the town centre alongside North and South Street. At this time it held a market that slowly helped transform this area into a thriving and pedestrianised shopping area, but this has declined quickly over recent decades.

For the weekly edition of Bygone Years our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been searching through his popular collection of historic and local photos to showcase this area during the 20th century. This was a period that saw a mass development of buildings and the pedestrianisation of this street to match popularity (credits to original photographers).
