Bygone Years: Gosport’s Railway History
GOSPORT may be one of the biggest towns in England without a train station but it did have a thriving railway network for over one hundred years between 1841 and 1953. This included its four main lines and around eight stations built at varying times; boosting tourism and trade whilst further receiving visits from Queen Victoria before her passing in 1901.
In this weekly edition of Bygone Years, our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been searching through his popular collection of historic and local photographs to showcase the best parts of Gosport’s past railway heritage; including the multiple train stations and tracks that have seen a re-development over generations (credits to original photographers).
