Bygone Years: History of West Street

WEST STREET is located within Fareham Town Centre and has remained an important road for residents since it was created in the twentieth century; being used by trams, buses and vehicles as a route from Southampton to Portsmouth. It featured a popular mix of shops including bakeries, banks, market stalls, family businesses, butchers and a brewery.

Pedestrianisation of this road began in the 1970s due to increasing demand for traffic and this created a path for future developments around West Street. These included the construction of Fareham Shopping Centre in two parts, multiple car parks and the additional Market Quay facilities as recently as 2005; all remaining open and trading at present time.

In this weekly edition of Bygone Years, our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been searching through his popular collection of historic and local photographs to showcase developments of West Street over past generations. This does cover examples of famous brands / sights in the town centre which now do not exist (credits to original photographers).
