Christmas bin strikes cancelled after pay talks

By Connor Steel

GOSPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL have confirmed that the planned industrial action by bin collection workers has been officially ‘cancelled’ following an agreement on pay; which was finalised early on Wednesday (December 20) and offers a major boost to residents across the town as they prepare to celebrate the coming festive season with friends / family.

Strike action had previously been announced by the GMB Union in conjunction with members from Urbaser Ltd, whom have undertaken waste and recycling collection services across Gosport since 2011. It follows the talks over “pay rates and conditions” during the cost of living crisis, with its workers prepared to take measures for 12 days from Boxing Day.

This action would have caused disruption for many residents over the Christmas and New Year period, where most will be staying at home / celebrating with loved ones. But a ‘new pay offer’ was made and accepted by union members last Friday (December 15), meaning that bin collections will follow this original council schedule for the “foreseeable future”.

Council Leader Peter Chegwyn was delighted at the news as he outlined: “We are pleased that the strike, which would have caused disruption for our residents at a ‘busy’ time of year, has been called off.” Urbaser Ltd’s Regional Manager, Tim Guile, added: “We are extremely pleased to have reached this agreement, averting the industrial action scheduled over the (coming) Christmas / New Year period. We believe the pay agreement is a great result for all parties involved.”

Residents are reminded that Christmas Trees may be collected between January 15-29 next year, although a slot must be booked using the form to use this free service. Meanwhile the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Grange Road will be open for the majority of the festive period (closed on December 25-26) and an appointment can be booked here.
