College records climate song with indie support

By Gary Lawrence

A GROUP OF music students based at St Vincent Sixth Form College saw hours of hard work pay off when they recorded their climate change song with the help of indie musician Jack Flanagan; which marks a huge step for this project after many months of work.

Second year students Ruby Philp (bass), Oscar Eames (drums), Morgan Holloway (piano), and Chloe Rees (vocalist / guitarist) wrote Last Chance with advice from the former Mystery Jets bassist last year. He returned to the college to help them record it in St Vincent’s own studio.

Jack will master the recording and oversee its production as a vinyl single this spring as part of the Lighthouse Learning Trust’s Art For Earth’s Sake project. It will then be released by the trust’s own record label as a double A side with a climate change song from students at sister college Richard Taunton Sixth Form College in Southampton.

Jack squeezed the recording session into his diary before he flies out to Japan to play two gigs with his wife Kitty Liv and he stated: “I was very impressed by how hard they had all been rehearsing and we managed to get it all down in five or six takes. Playing live in a studio can be quite nerve-wracking but the guys really pulled it out of the bag.”

Music teacher Joe Chilcott and engineer Max Burdip were on hand to assist with the recording, alongside a group of music production students. And Jack was very complimentary as he said: “The recording studio set-up at the college is great and I enjoyed the session. They all played really well and I can’t wait to hear the finished product.”
