Council appoints contractors for new Gosport park
By Connor Steel
GOSPORT BOROUGH COUNCIL have announced that they have appointed a contractor to undertake landscaping for a brand new two-thousand square metre “public park” near to the town centre; which will be replacing the previous bus station facility that is awaiting final demolition after over fifty years of sustained service to residents across the borough.
Works are likely to start in later spring by local contractors ‘PMC Construction & Development Services’, who will begin to undertake tasks such as seeding and adding features in preparation for the park. The space is currently due to open for summer this year and will allow visitors to enjoy a sight of Portsmouth Harbour, as well as bringing them to the area.
Landscaping will follow the completion of demolition works at the old station with final preparations ongoing at this time; the site blocked off with barriers and a safe perimeter at this time. But it remains unclear about when this building could start to be taken down by constructors with the safe removal of all asbestos being carried out regularly in recent weeks.
Development of the space will continue into the 2026 summer as the council is proposing to create a new performance structure to host live waterfront events, which will act alongside concessions buildings for cafes / bars. Improved public toilets (including the accessible ‘Changing Places’ facility) and a new ticket kiosk for the Gosport Ferry will also be built.
Planning applications will be released in due course for this new redevelopment, which is set to become a ‘sustainable’ gateway for the town centre from the ferry port and bus interchange. It further continues a project that has included the creation of a new bus station and multiple tweaks to one High Street area which is used by buses (North Cross Street).
