Police appeal for witnesses after fatal M27 collision

HAMPSHIRE CONSTABULARY have announced they have launched an “urgent” appeal for witnesses and information to assist their continuing investigations following a fatal road traffic collision early last Friday evening (January 5), which tragically occurred on the M27 Eastbound during rush hour between Junction Eleven (Fareham) and Twelve (Cosham).

Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4:44pm to many reports that a blue Nissan Juke vehicle had collided with a grey Ford Focus on the hard shoulder. Despite the best efforts of paramedics the Nissan driver was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and identified as a Portsmouth male in his sixties. The family have been informed.

Detectives have confirmed their investigations will be entitled ‘Operation Mainhaul’ and continue their enquiries, but are keen to speak to anybody who was on the M27 at the time and saw what happened. This could include those who saw either of these two vehicles in the build-up to this incident, as well as those who could have dash-cam or video footage.

Investigators are asking for people with any fresh information to contact officers by calling their non-emergency number 101 and quote the case’s reference number of 44240006859. They can further submit details using the online reporting tool available on the Hampshire Police website, with all official support and further guidance available on the links here.

Alternatively, readers can contact the “independent charity” Crimestoppers 100% anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 for absolutely free; or via their anonymous online forms which can be found through their website: https://orlo.uk/250kR

Police have further thanked those who supported both drivers at the scene before the arrival of emergency services, as well as everybody who waited patiently for hours in cold temperatures whilst the collision was cleared. The carriageway was fully reopened at around 10pm when all forensic investigation was undertaken and the debris was safely gathered.
