Sultan hosts its successful annual Families Day event

By Matthew Hibberd

MULTIPLE FAMILIES were able to enjoy an action packed afternoon of fun and laughter at HMS Sultan as the training established marked its annual ‘Families Day’, which saw a large number of invited guests and personnel come together in a social environment under glorious summer skies.

A wide variety of activities were accessible for attendees including birds of prey, a petting, child friendly inflatables and rides of the HMS Sultan Steam Waggon; the selection seeming to satisfy everybody regardless of their age. But the most popular activity was undoubtedly the option to soak a sailor and many people enjoyed throwing wet sponges at multiple personnel, who may have enjoyed the respite from warm temperatures.

Refreshments and ice cream was provided for everybody alongside entertainment from a live band playing a selection of popular tunes; whilst the Tigers Motorcycle Display Team further added to the occasion. There was also an opportunity for personnel and their families to learn about support available to them from a range of service charities / organisations.

The Executive Officer of HMS Sultan, Commander Fergus Ochtman-Corfe said: “What a fantastic day we’ve had at our Families Day and it’s a privilege to have our friends and family here with us to enjoy it. The event offers us all an opportunity to relax and have some fun after what’s been a long, and demanding, term.”

“In this time, as part of our professional engineering training, we’ve seen significant milestones, including our first Royal Australian Navy Nuclear submarine officers Passing out of Sultan under AUKUS. we’ve also represented Sultan across multiple sports, including Field Gun, made a positive contribution towards our local community, promoting STEM to school children through SULSTEMIC and by providing personnel to help clear gardens and provide basic maintenance for local schools, nurseries and scout groups, as part of our INSET Day.”

“All of these things have been achieved with the support of our friends and families and today also allows us to recognise this. I’m also very grateful to all of our sponsors and charities who have helped to make this Families Day a spectacular event.”
