Opening river fishing week for barbel

After a 3 month close season for river fishing it came to that time time of the year again when the rivers were reopened on the 16th june.

So this year we decided myself Kevin Richards and my father in law to go in hunt for some of those large barbel on the River Trent at Newark. Deciding to take in 5 days at Smeatons 7 peg stretch which is said to have barbel coming out upto 17lb. Whilst fishing Smeatons mainly using 16mm halibut pellets we managed to catch 10 Barbel ranging in weight from 7lb to the largest being just under 13lb with a fair few chub and bream to add to the haul.

With a further 3 days booked up at Malt Kiln Lane in Newark and baking heat we new it was going to be tough during the day. So we decided to concentrate on the evenings catching 3 Barbel up to to 12lb 2oz and unfortunately loosing 1.

To try out the fishing on the River Trent you can book at Smeatons or Malt Kiln Lane Fishery.
