Collingwood the base for Winter Wonderland

HMS COLLINGWOOD has held its very first Winter Wonderland event for staff and their families at the base in Newgate Lane.

Following the disappointment of recent Open Days being cancelled due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was an opportunity for the command to thank the team of Royal Navy and civilian staff and their families for the dedication and support over the preceding months.

Attractions included traditional fairground rides, German market-style food outlets and various stalls giving the opportunity to purchase Christmas crafts.

Running over two evenings, the event was the brainchild of the PT department and, along with Lieutenant Gareth Neal, they formed the organising committee.

Gareth said “This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved with a great idea and some motivation. Everyone on the committee was determined to make this a success and we’re delighted with how it’s turned out.  We could not have achieved everything we did without the support of the RNRMC, Capital and MBDA.”

A big hit was the synthetic icerink located in the main gymnasium, which was the focal point of the ‘launch’ by Commander Terry Tyack, Executive Officer.

He said “This is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to our staff and their families for their support over the past 18 months of this unprecedented Covid period.”

AB Diver William Maclean, who enjoyed the shooting gallery, said “I think this is a brilliant idea. It’s really important for us all to have some fun after everything that’s happened.”

Also enjoying the attractions were Petty Officer Physical Trainer (POPT) Jamie Kern and his son Jayden,12, who are pictured on the Ferris wheel.

Jamie said: “This is a great facility, Jayden is really loving it.” Jayden agreed, saying: “I’m having a great time, I really enjoyed the Ferris wheel.”
