Open Days to host information evening

By Connor Steel

GOSPORT HERITAGE OPEN DAYS (GHODS) are offering local residents an opportunity to find out more about their fantastic work since 1992 and how they can join in events to be held in September as part as the national ‘open days’ festival; the town’s branch confirming a free information evening for all on April 20.

Organisers have confirmed this will be held between 6pm and 8pm at Elson Community Library & Hub as they look to raise awareness of Heritage Open Days, which is an annual celebration of both architecture and culture that brings together thousands of volunteers working with organisations across the country.

As part of an annual ‘festival’, September sees ten days where visitors are offered free access to historical landmarks that are either not open to the public or would normally charge money for entry. Guided tours, presentations and themed activities will also be available for 2022’s event held between September 9-16.

And visitors to the information evening will be given a local angle on the national event, including how Gosport has paid a role since its foundation in 1992 and a recap of successful activities held last year; which saw thousands of visitors attend Gosport-based events following a Covid-19 affected programme in 2020.

More details on the 2022 theme, Astounding Inventions, will also be available alongside thoughts on how Gosport is hoping to celebrate our local pioneers and innovators; visitors are further invited to offer their own feedback on all things Heritage Open Days and how they can improve for events in September this year.

Two guest speakers will also be presenting during the evening with Penny Harris offering a detailed talk entitled ‘A little piece of Gosport’s History’, which will be held alongside a similar speech called ‘The future of Priddys Hard’ from the Chief Executive Officer of Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust Helen Prowse.

Finally there will be an opportunity to meet members of the voluntary local management team including event organisers, guides, speakers and promoters; who will be on hand to answer any questions and are always happy to receive offers of help across a range of varying but crucial areas over the coming months.

A limited amount of refreshments and nibbles will be available throughout the evening, with more information on GHODs available to read here including any updates or changes to the event on April 20. Alternatively readers can call 07531 001 003 or email  info@gosportheritage.co.uk to talk to a member of the team.
