Bygone Years: Over Gosport’s Skies

IT’S not always known that Gosport played a massive part in the country’s Airforce during the ‘First World War’; hosting multiple squadrons and most training activities for the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in Grange. The historic site is now part of HMS Sultan; whilst the RFC formed into the ‘Royal Airforce’ we have helping to defend us in turbulent modern times.

In this weekly edition of Bygone Years, our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been searching through his popular collections of historic and recent local imagery to showcase the RFC between 1914 to 1918. This includes scenes from the small airfield, its dedicated squadrons and airship based in Grange at the time (credit to all original photographers)
