Bygone Years: Stories from the Harbour

PORTSMOUTH HARBOUR is used by thousands of residents every day and has a big surface area of 3,124 hectares; linking the city with neighbouring Gosport via water. With the narrow entrances and protections from the Isle of Wight it has been used as a ‘strategic military base’ before it transformed to a popular transport port featuring multiple services.

In this weekly edition of Bygone Years, our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been searching through his popular collection of historic and local photos to showcase the use of Portsmouth Harbour. These images cover landing stages from both sides of the harbour and use of the ferry services through past generations (credit to original photographers).
