Council shines a light on Fareham volunteering
By Connor Steel
FAREHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL has highlighted the benefit and opportunities of helping across local communities as they marked Volunteers Week; which finishes on Sunday (June 8) and is a nationwide celebration of approximately 5.6 million people in the United Kingdom who freely offer their service / time to a worthy course or organisation without pay.
Multiple benefits have been linked to volunteering such as a positive feeling for wellbeing and social connections whilst also improving quality of life through routines. It can further help develop skills that may be used within CVs (curriculum vitae) and most opportunities provide references which can be useful if applying for paid employment roles in any area.
Examples of volunteering can be seen in several sectors such as health & social care, charity work, sports, journalism / press, administration and emergency services; but there are many opportunities accessible to all. And councillors have released information about potential volunteering jobs for residents to consider throughout this ongoing summer period.
Community First Wessex is funded by the Council to provide support for promoting their volunteering opportunities and helping prospective volunteers to find positions that could be inspiring for them. They also hold Community Showcases every year and this is planned to take place in West Street on July 5 (Saturday) from 10am to 4pm for people to attend.
Volunteers are currently being sought to assist with Fareham’s Big Weekend Event to take place on July 12 (Saturday) and July 13 (Sunday) across the town. This includes marshals to assist with navigating people across the town as well as others to take part in running of its different activities; the Council asking people to contact leisure@fareham.gov.uk.
Anyone interested in volunteering can also search for an opportunity by using Volunteer First; which is accessible here and matches potential volunteers with suitable openings in this local community. There is further detail on volunteering opportunities via Get Volunteering and Reach Volunteering; whilst advice is found via this official Government web-link.
