Poor weather forecast cancels summer festival

By Gary Lawrence

ST VINCENT COLLEGE have announced that they have cancelled their Summer Fest event due to take place this Saturday (June 7) due to concerns over weather conditions; which look set to worsen over the next forty-eight hours across Gosport and surrounding areas.

This upsetting announcement was made on Thursday afternoon (June 5) and follows updated forecasts from the Met Office showing heavy winds accompanied by strong showers. Gusts are said to range between 18mph and 42mph throughout with the peak likely to be approximately 1pm, which would be halfway through the festivities.

Planning for the college’s fourth such event has taken many months and organisers were hoping to beat the successes of 2024 with nearly two thousand visitors. Several music / performing arts students were set to showcase their talents via live performances and many games / activities had been lined up. Thirty stallholders were further said to be involved in the day, including a potential licenced bar.

Executive Principal Andy Grant said about the cancellation: “We’re all extremely disappointed but the weather forecast left us with no choice really. We have to consider the safety of the site and, because it is fairly exposed, the prospect of strong winds is too much of a risk.

He continued: “It’s disappointing because we’ve been really lucky with the weather in previous years and our staff and students have put a lot of work into making this the best Summer Fest yet and I feel for them. We will be back bigger and better next year.”
