Home Office withdraws interest in Wates House
By Connor Steel
FAREHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL have announced that the Home Office are withdrawing their interests in using Wates House as accommodation for asylum seekers; thus concluding a ‘hugely supported campaign’ from local residents, the police chief and constituency MP Suella Braverman which began early in 2025 after the initial proposals were released.
Officials were previously aiming to procure this apartment block in Wallington and transform it into housing for a total of seventy-two asylum seekers. This involved purchasing this site from its private owners before adding an extension and one extra storey for the building; which currently has room for nine one bed apartments and a further 18 with two beds.
The plans were immediately met with concerns from the council and political figures including Fareham & Waterlooville MP Suella Braverman, who launched a petition that was ‘signed’ by over a thousand residents. A recent protest outside the building was then held to show the concerns of people and the police gave their thoughts about its potential impact.
Councillors were reported to have been working “quietly in the background through the correct channels to achieve the desired outcome” which was announced on Thursday afternoon (April 3) after a ‘communication’ from the Home Office. The council have previously rejected the prospect of buying the building citing “safety” concerns and unjustifiable costs.
