Home Secretary warns against Hamas support

By Connor Steel

HOME SECETARY Suella Braverman has warned that the “full force of the law” will be used against those who support Hamas or intimidate Jewish residents across Britain; the Fareham MP delivering this key message after the Palestinian Militant Group launched a co-ordinated wave of rocket missiles and armed fighters in Israel early on Saturday morning.

These developments come during tension between Israel and Hamas with this latest attack coming with little warnings, leading to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Betanyahu “declaring war”. They have responded by launching their own air strikes on the Gaza Strip and troops are highly likely to enter the same territories imminently after security meetings.

Local media reports state that over six hundred Israelis have been killed over two days of fighting at this time of writing with approximately 100 others being held hostage; whilst the conflict has caused 370 deaths in Gaza and thousands of injuries. One British man has furthermore been killed attending a music festival which was targeted by Hamas gunmen.

Although British politicians have condemned the scenes in Israel across this weekend, footage has emerged on social media of people waving the Palestine flag and celebrating the conflict in London. This has been shared by hundreds of users on X (formerly Twitter) and has seen fears of protests across the nation alongside attacks on Jewish community.

Concerns have further been raised by celebrities including Rachel Riley with the Metropolitan Police stating they would be increasing the ‘presence’ of officers in response to a “number of incidents” in London. They have also advised those affected by all similar instances to contact police using their “non-emergency” contact number and pledged full support.

Ms Braverman wrote on X: “Whenever Israel is attacked, Islamists and other racists use Israeli defensive measures as a pretext to stir up hatred against British Jews. There must be zero tolerance for all anti-Semitism or the glorification of terrorism on the streets of Britain. I expect police to use the full force of the law against displays of support for Hamas.”

The Shadow Home Secretary Ywette Cooper, currently in Liverpool for the Labour party conference, posted on Sunday about the events this weekend. She stated: “Truly appalling terror attacks by Hamas on Israel. Those on British streets celebrating yesterday’s attacks must be unequivocally condemned and antisemitic hate must face full force of the law”.
