Residents urged to access NHS App services

By Carolyn Denton

NHS HAMPSHIRE & IOW have urged residents across the region to download the NHS App as part of a new summer campaign; which was launched recently and follows after figures were released that shows that sixty-two percent of patients in the area use it for a number of their medical needs.

The free app was first created back in January 2019 and can be used for varying services within the NHS; such as ordering prescriptions, asking for fit notes, making appointments and viewing test results. It is further handy to view patient’s NHS numbers / medical records and better manage health conditions without having to phone their GP.

Residents can also use the app to access health services on behalf of those being cared for including vulnerable adults / children; whilst it can signpost people in the right direction when their GP practice is closed for whatever reason. This includes the NHS 111 service that has helped many patients across the region by giving instant advice / medical health.

It has proven to be a valuable source for medical professionals who can now send direct messages to patients, but only if they have their notifications switched on. Users are being asked to check this and more instructions can be found via this link.

Dr Tom Bertram, local GP and Clinical Director for Primary and Local Care at NHS Hampshire & Isle of Wight said: “I would encourage everyone to download and use the NHS App as it is a brilliant resource that allows patients to take control of their healthcare.

“GPs are busier than ever and are seeing more and more patients, so if patients can use the app to manage appointments, check test results and order repeat prescriptions it really helps us to free up time to see those who need urgent appointments. By turning on your notifications within the App, it also allows your GP to send you messages directly thought the app rather than via a text message or email.”

Christine, a patient from Stubbington, was asked why she used the NHS App and she said: “It’s easy to use and I can do a variety of things such as check some of my medical records, order my repeat prescription and make appointments when the service is available. I can also receive notifications and messages from the NHS and my GP.”

Anna Barton from Milford on Sea was also asked why she regularly uses the app, she said: “It makes the whole process of engaging with the surgery more efficient and it saves time.”

Finally, Beverley Braybrook, a resident from Test Valley who regularly uses the app was asked why she likes it. She responded: “I am able to make appointments to see my doctor without having to wait in a telephone queue, order repeat prescriptions and review my test results all from the comfort of my armchair. The surgery can send me messages and reminders via the app which is really helpful.”

Readers can start using the NHS App by downloading it on your smartphone or tablet via the Google play or App store. They can also access the same services in a web browser by logging in through the NHS website. However users must be aged over thirteen years old and be registered with a GP surgery in England or the Isle of Man, with more details here.
