THOUSANDS of visitors enjoyed a memorable day out at HMS Collingwood as the training establishment hosted its annual Open Day last Saturday (July 4) in Fareham; which saw crowds of people enjoy a number of activities in temperatures reaching over twenty-five degrees celsius throughout.
The highlight was the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity Field Gun Competition with 18 crews from across the UK taking part alongside teams from Cyprus, Naples and Gibraltar to compete for the Brickwoods Trophy. Gibraltar’s return marked a special moment, as they had not entered a crew for seven years.
For the second year running it was the Army’s Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) team who triumphed in the final. Their No 1 Trainer, Warrant Officer 2, Jamie Rawson said: “There is so much that goes into Field Gun and our crew has demonstrated hard work and determination. I am really proud of the fantastic effort shown by this incredible bunch of guys!”
Beyond the competition visitors were treated to a breathtaking display by the Royal Navy Parachute Display Team, historical weapons demonstrations from the Trafalgar Gun team, and impressive street band performances from the Royal Marines Band. Local professional and college bands further performed in the dedicated music arena showcasing their talents to audiences of all ages.
Families were also able to explore the Military Engagement Zone, where Royal Navy Divers showcased their skills and engaged with younger visitors. Recruitment stands representing the services were on hand, alongside a Warship Simulator, a free funfair, and a wide range of charity and commercial stalls.
Captain John Cromie, Commanding Officer of HMS Collingwood, said: “It has been a pleasure to welcome thousands of visitors here today for our Open Day. It was good to see our sailors engaging with members of the community we serve, and to give all our visitors the chance to learn more about naval life. The wide range of attractions on offer ensured there was something for everyone, helping to make the day an enjoyable and memorable experience for our personnel, their families and all our many visitors alike.
He continued: “I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our sponsors, whose generous support played a vital role in the success of the event. Their contribution is greatly appreciated. The Field Gun Competition once again proved to be a highlight of the day, showcasing outstanding teamwork, determination and spirit from all those taking part. My congratulations go to the winning team on a well-deserved victory. Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a successful event. We look forward to seeing you next year.”
