Badminton set for a Saturday morning social

A POPULAR badminton club and weekly social in Gosport is seeking more members to join their community building the shuttlecock sport locally, with the group starting preparations for a key landmark later this year as they celebrate forty years of existence in October.

Saturday Morning Badminton Club is based at St Vincent Leisure Centre in Gosport (within the college groups) and meet every weekend for non-league mixed doubles. Playing sessions are between 8.30am and 10am despite adverts saying 9am; being located in the main sports hall where up to four courts are in use depending on attendance.

Introductory sessions are free for everybody and each session afterwards is normally charged at just £2.50 to pay for hire of the hall.  Although the badminton group is not welcoming ‘absolute beginners’ to the sport, anybody aged eighteen years old and over can join at any point. Newcomers are asked to bring their own racquet and ask for the club leader Steve Black.

And in October the club will be celebrating its fortieth anniversary since its first session held at St Vincent on October 9, 1982; Mr Black being one of four founding members and has been leader ever since its foundation almost four decades on.

The club are hoping to mark the occasion with a special evening to be held on October 8, 2022; with former and current club members all invited to attend the celebrations. More information will be released near the time although the event is unlikely to be open to the general public.
