Borough pays final respects to murdered Levi
By Connor Steel
GOSPORT RESIDENTS have come together to pay tributes to twenty-two year old Levi Kent in an “all-day” community celebration of his life held throughout Thursday (December 21); which came just twenty-seven days after his ‘appalling’ murder that shocked people across the borough and beyond as they raised “thousands of pounds” towards the funeral.
The day began with a “pre-drinks” event from Quay West Studio in Forton which was followed by a service at St John’s Church at 11am. His coffin was then taken to Portchester Crematorium via a motorcycle escort for a second ceremony before the “leaving party” and subsequent “after party” that was held at the ‘White Horse Inn ‘in Bridgemary afterwards.
Levi’s final journey was made in a white Mercedez vehicle and this was a car he aspired to own before his death; whilst residents lined the streets to pay tributes to a “kind, caring, and funny man”. Many mourners wore a photograph of Levi on their T-shirts, whilst others were invited to wear a selection of trainers to his funeral to pay honour to his dress style.
Close family members were in attendance through the day, and they were accompanied by friends / loved ones of Levi; who travelled from across the country to attend these celebrations. His mother, Tammy Kent, told the Portsmouth News that her “heart was full” thanks to the love shown by friends, family and indeed strangers throughout the day’s ‘tributes’;
Volunteers had spent recent days putting tributes across Bridgemary and Forton in their preparation for the funeral day; including balloons and flags around St Johns Church. This included all red and black decorations that were attached to most gates, road signs and lampposts in both areas which helped to build upon a supportive and colourful atmosphere.
A murder investigation was launched following Levi’s passing early on November 24; which was called Operation Talus by officers. Police have made twelve arrests and seven charges during the aftermath for a range of offences; including murder, robbery, possession of a bladed article, assisting an offender and also perverting the course of justice / perjury.
Court appearances have further been announced for January 10 (Wednesday) and January 15 (Monday) next year for those charged in connection with this murder; officers offering updates on the Hampshire Constabulary website.
