Bygone Years: Life at Royal Clarence Yard

ROYAL CLARENCE YARD was first launched in 1828 as a “purpose-serving” establishment to serve food and drink for all Navy personnel; this twenty-hectares of land hosting crucial provisions including a bakery, the pump house, brewery and slaughterhouse. It is currently base for residential properties, offices and hospitality outlets after its redevelopment.

In this weekly edition of Bygone Years, our Globe photographer Peter Maguire has been searching through his popular collections of historic and recent local imagery to showcase the local Naval establishment; including the variety of food and drink provision alongside Grade Two buildings that have existed for 200 years (credit to all original photographers).
