Sultan hosts successful annual family event

By Matthew Hibberd

HMS SULTAN recently hosted an action packed afternoon of fun as staff held its annual “Families Day” at the training establishment in Gosport; bringing invited visitors to the site for a series of activities and excitement throughout the occasion.

This event is held every year and encourages a sense of togetherness for all involved; further offering an opportunity for families to learn about the support available for them from service charities and organisations.

Staff from HMS Sultan also celebrated their contributions to national events that have occurred in the last twelve months; with many members participating in the State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II last year and furthermore the Coronation of King Charles III in May.

Popular attractions included a petting zoo including birds of prey, rides upon the HMS Sultan steam wagon and inflatables suitable for all ages. There was also a return of “Soak-a-Sailor” with personnel facing a barrage of wet sponges much to laughter and a need for towels.

A range of refreshments and ice creams were offered as visitors enjoyed performances from a live band; plenty of singing and dancing held across the site. There were also entertainment by the Solent Stars Motorcycle Display Team, a local gymnastic group, and Club Swinging display by Leading Physical Trainers Course from HMS Temeraire; which all added to this occasion.

The Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan, Captain Jo Deakin OBE said: “What a brilliant day! It’s a real privilege to welcome our friends and families into Sultan, to relax, have some fun and to say thank you for all their support. It has been a busy term for all our personnel.

“Alongside training, skilled, and professional engineers and technicians, we’ve supported the King’s Coronation, held our first major STEM event- SULSTEMIC and during our staff training day, our trainees have worked within our local community, providing help and support to important community projects in Gosport and the local area.”

“I’m extremely proud of all their achievements and I am pleased we can recognise the important role that our families play to support us every day! I’m also hugely grateful for the support from our sponsors and charities that have allowed this year to be such a spectacular event.”
