Police appeal for witnesses after fatal A27 collision

HAMPSHIRE CONSTABULARY have announced they have launched an “urgent” appeal for witnesses and information to help their continuing investigations following a severe road traffic collision in Fareham yesterday evening (March 25), which left a man aged in his eighties with ‘fatal’ injuries and saw a stretch of the A27 closed for several hours overnight.

Emergency services were called at approximately 7:26pm to a report of a collision between a grey Nissan Qashqai and a black Volkswagen Golf vehicle. Despite the work of paramedics including air ambulance staff, the driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward and his next of kin has since been informed by ‘specialist’ officers.

The A27 was closed for several hours between the ‘Quay Street’ roundabout and Junction 11 whilst the scene was fully examined, with drivers thanked for showing patience and understanding throughout. The stretch reopened this morning (March 26) across both directions and police investigations are continuing into this collision; as well as before and after.

Detectives believe that there were other drivers in the surrounding area who may have seen this collision and have not yet spoken to police, including those that may have seen either of the two vehicles involved. They are particularly keen to hear from drivers who may have dashcam footage taken from the area that could prove useful to their investigations.

Investigators are asking for anybody with information or footage to contact police by calling the non-emergency number 101 and quote the case’s reference ‘1790 of 25 March 2024’. They can further submit details using this online reporting tool available on the Hampshire Police website, with all official support and further guidance available on the links here.

Alternatively, readers can contact the “independent charity” Crimestoppers 100% anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 for absolutely free; or via their anonymous online forms which can be found through their website: https://orlo.uk/250kR
