Stubbington ‘improvements’ to begin next week

By Connor Steel

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL will begin work shortly on a £775,000 scheme aimed at improving ease of walking, cycling and traffic management throughout Stubbington Village, their specific focus being upon the two roundabouts at key junctions with Titchfield Road/Mays Lane and Stubbington Lane/Stubbington Green.

Planned work will start from October 17 (Monday) and is being carried out by Mildren Construction, covering a widening of footways and an improvement of road management, whilst retaining existing two-lane entries. It has been funded by local development contributions including Local Growth Deal and Active Travel Fund.

This work follows completion of the Stubbington Bypass which opened to traffic back in May after two years of construction through Fareham, which is said to have improved congestion and also air quality in the area over recent weeks. The three mile route cost £42 million and is believed to be used by 20,000 vehicles daily.

Drivers are however warned of potential disruption in the area until at least March 2023, which is required to maintain safety for both the public and workforce. This includes temporary traffic management measures in place between the hours of 9am to 4pm between Monday and Friday with potential for traffic delays.

There will also be disruption in the crucial areas of both Titchfield Road /Mays Lane and Stubbington Lane / Stubbington Green roundabouts, where single lanes will be used on each approach and both roundabouts itself. All traffic measures will be removed between December and early January during the festive period.

Councillor Nick Adams-King, Executive Member for Highway Operations, said in a short statement“Having successfully delivered the Stubbington Bypass, these important improvements will help direct through traffic away from the village centre to improve the village environment for local people who prefer to walk & cycle.”

He concluded by speaking about the potential traffic disruption in Stubbington and nearby roads due to last six months: “I appreciate that the nature of the work will cause some temporary disruption & our highway’s team will work closely with the (HCC) contractor to ensure every effort is made to keep this to a minimum.”
