Tickets selling out for Lee Rigby clash

By Connor Steel

AFC PORTCHESTER have warned supporters that tickets for the upcoming Lee Rigby Memorial Cup 2022 charity match are selling rapidly and could be sold out at any point, with the final batch being released for online purchases earlier this week for the popular day of football at the On-Site Group Stadium.

It is estimated that over two thousand supporters will attend the large-scale event on June 3 (Bank Holiday Friday), which will see a team of former Portsmouth players take on a team of ex-Glasgow stars in honour of Fusilier Lee Rigby; a British Army solider that was murdered during a terrorist attack back in May 2013.

The match was originally scheduled to be held on May 28, but this date was changed to work alongside the upcoming Platinum Jubilee weekend in a bid to encourage more supporters to attend. And this seems to have worked as tickets have been sent to addresses around the country including Aberdeen as fans look to attend the first Memorial Cup to be played since 2019 due to Covid-19 rules.

Supporters will be able to see a range of stars in action with Portsmouth’s 2008 FA Cup winner Pedro Mendes, goalkeeping legend Alan Knight, Darren Anderton, Paul Walsh, Lee Bradbury, Matt Taylor, and Sean Davis are all included in the Pompey squad for the ninety minute encounter.

For Rangers they have confirmed that Michael Mols, Mark Walters, Clint Hill, Neil Murray, Alex Rae, Marvin Andrews, and Gregory Vignal will all feature throughout the afternoon; alongside former England, Rangers and Portsmouth striking legend Mark Hateley.

The match will kick off at 2pm with tickets costing £13 for adults and £6 for children, with those brought for the cancelled 2021 event also permissible on June 3. Tickets can be purchased via the Portchester shop link here, whilst parking is available on the field next to the stadium with public transport nearby.

Even if supporters cannot get to the match itself, there is another opportunity to join the event with an ‘Evening with the Stars’, costing £25 per person to attend from 7pm in the clubhouse. Legends Mark Hateley and Keith Gillespie will be hosting the event, with the price including a pie and pint on the night alongside postage of tickets. Supporters can also buy replica shirts via Macron London and South East here, which will cost £40 (including VAT) to buy with worldwide shipping available.

Monies raised from the whole event and souvenir selling will go to the Lee Rigby Foundation charity; who are looking to provide a network of respite therapy facilities across the country for bereaved military families, veterans families and serving military families in the UK and beyond.
